BURNT OUTI've been feeling lately like I really need a vacation. People in this country just don't rest - not to mention the folks here in NYC. I was really despairing yesterday, but this too shall pass.Seems like things in general have been in a crazy funk. I'm sure I'm not the only one feeling burnt out. My friend Ann and I were just emailing about it today. I may have to take a mental health day in August, I've decided. I'd consider that a sick day - wouldn't you?I'm sad to say I'm ready for Summer to be over. It hasn't felt like a real Summer to me, and I'm ready for it to go. Fall - here we come! Halloween or BUST!
Out of PowerIt feels like this is the summer of doom. Power is out all over the place, the trains are a mess, the weather is biblical. What is going on? Well, first of all, there are just too many people and New York is bursting at the seams. You can see it in the frustration that is oozing from the sidewalk. People have less and less respect for each other. Especially in the increasingly infrequent trains. People are packed in like styrofoam peanuts. Problem is, we aren't nearly as pliable. Or soft. And we're sweaty, smelly, tired, and angry.I went into Duane Reade tonight. It is usually freezing cold with AC. Tonight they had the door open and no AC. If it was on, it was on the lowest setting. Sign of the times, baby. Sign of the times.
WAY TOO FAST WEEKENDSadly we are in the final hours of this weekend. It was a good one weather-wise and everything-else-wise. It was action-packed. I ran 6 miles yesterday and drove upstate a bit to a baby shower/bbq. Today we went to a Cyclones game after having a delicious brunch at The Cup with Queens friends and my husband - yay!The 6 mile run was great. My good friend joined me and we ran the loop around Central Park. Not easy, but it felt great, and it was my first 6 miles ever! Good to know I will be able to run at least half of the Half Marathon next month. The Cyclones lost the game today, but what a FUN experience! I think every New Yorker should hit a Cyclones game at least once. Good, cheesy fun!And now. I have to force myself to wind down so I can be "ready" for work tomorrow.I am badly in need of a vacation!
SUBWAY MANI??Okay, so I know I recently ranted about women who put on their make-up while riding the subway train. I have an even WORSE pet peeve: PEOPLE WHO CUT THEIR NAILS ON THE TRAIN!I had the unfortunate experience of being near an old woman who chose to trim her nails on the subway yesterday. SO ANNOYING! No one wants to see, or even worse, HEAR that! Who knows what disgusting grime or fungus lurks in those nails?? I mean honestly. What is wrong with people?
It's 9 O'ClockOn July Fourth. Our nation's birthday. In several locations, there are explosions being set off at this precise moment. Intentional explosions, only these are not meant to destroy marketplaces or homes. They are not intended to take people's lives. They are simply explosions for entertainment. Pretty colors. Whee! For some reason I don't feel like looking at them now. My husband is out watching them with friends. They will probably drink and celebrate into the wee hours of the morning. But I don't feel like celebrating. Can you guess why?I want to be alone. I can hear the helicopters overhead in the soupy air. It is hot, muggy and uncomfortable tonight. I have no problem being the party pooper.
